Background InformationBeta-galactoside alpha-2,6-sialyltransferase 1 (UniProt: P15907; also known as EC:2.4.99.1, Alpha 2,6-ST 1, CD75, B-cell antigen CD75, CMP-N-acetylneuraminate-beta-galactosamide-alpha-2,6-sialyltransferase 1, ST6Gal I, ST6GalI, Sialyltransferase 1) is encoded by the ST6GAL1 (also known as SIAT1) gene (Gene ID: 6480) in human. ST6Gal I is a single-pass type II membrane protein that serves to transfer sialic acid from CMP-sialic acid to galactose-containing acceptor substrates. It is involved in the generation of the cell-surface carbohydrate determinants and differentiation antigens. It is normally found in the Golgi but can also be proteolytically processed to a generate a soluble form. The membrane-bound form is mainly found in the in trans cisternae of Golgi. It is predominately expressed on germinal center originated B cells and lymphomas. It has a cytoplasmic domain (aa 1-9), a transmembrane domain (aa 10-26), and a large lumenal domain (aa 27-406). Its expression and activity have been associated with tumor metastasis in breast and colon cancers. ST6GAL1 is also preferentially expressed in undifferentiated hPSCs and its down-regulation in undifferentiated hPSCs can lead to a reduction in Oct4 levels and alters the expression of several genes involved in morphogenesis.
