Background InformationMetalloreductase STEAP4 (STEAP4), also known as Dudulin-4, Six-transmembrane epithelial antigen of prostate 4, Tumor necrosis factor-alpha-induced adipose related protein, and encoded by the gene name STEAP4 and TIARP, is a metalloreductase that has the ability to reduce both Fe3+ to Fe2+ and Cu2+ to Cu1+. STEAP4 inhibits anchorage-independent cell proliferation and uses NAD+ as acceptor. STEAP4 is associated with obesity and insulin-resistance, and might be involved in inflammatory arthritis, through the regulation of inflammatory cytokines. STEAP4 has been shown to play an important role in systemic metabolic homeostasis, integrating inflammatory and metabolic responses. STEAP4 interacts with and phosphorylates PTK2/FAK1. STEAP4 is expressed in white and brown adipose tissues cells, as well as in muscle and liver cells. In addition, STEAP4 has been detected in joints and spleens of arthritic mice.
