Background InformationHepatocyte Growth Factor (HGF), also known as Scatter Factor (SF) and Hepatopoietin A, is a pleiotrophic growth factor which is produced by mesodermally derived cells such as endothelial cells, Kupffer cells/macrophages, and hepatic fat-storing cells. HGF/SF is a potent effector of growth, movement, differentiation and invasiveness of epithelial and cancer cells. It can induce epithelial-mesenchymal conversion of epithelial cells in culture, support epithelial branching duct formation in the developing lung and elicit a potent organotrophic function for regeneration of liver, kidney and lung through epithelial-stromal interactions.
