Background InformationTRA-1-60 is expressed upon the surface of human tetracarcinoma stem cells (EC), human embryonic germ cells (EG) and human embryonic stem cells (ES). TRA-1-60 reacts with a neuraminidase sensitive epitope of a high molecular weight glycoprotein that are down-regulated upon differentiation. Recently this antigen has been proposed to be a form of the protein podocalyxin. TRA-1-60, can be detected in the serum of germ cell tumor patients and provides a useful complement to the established serum markers human chorionic gonadotropin and α-fetoprotein, especially in those patients without elevated serum human chorionic gonadotropin or α-fetoprotein.
