DescriptionAnti-Synaptophysin Antibody, clone SY38, Alexa Fluor® 488 Conjugate
Alternate Names
  • Synaptophysin
  • Major synaptic vesicle protein p38
Background InformationSynaptophysin is a synaptic vesicle glycoprotein with four transmembrane domains weighing 38 kDa. It is present in neuroendocrine cells and in virtually all neurons in the brain and spinal cord that participate in synaptic transmission. The localization and ubiquitous expression of this protein in neuronal tissue makes it an excellent marker for neurons and neuroendocrine tumors. The gene for this protein is located on the X chromosome (Xp11.23-p11.22). The exact function of the protein is unknown: it interacts with the essential synaptic vesicle protein synaptobrevin, but when the synaptophysin gene is experimentally inactivated in animals, they still develop and function normally.

  • SYP
Purification MethodProtein G Purfied
UniProt Number
UniProt SummaryFUNCTION: Possibly involved in structural functions as organizing other membrane components or in targeting the vesicles to the plasma membrane.

SIZE: 313 amino acids; 33845 Da

SUBUNIT: Homohexamer or homotetramer.

SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Cytoplasmic vesicle, secretory vesicle, synaptic vesicle membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein.

TISSUE SPECIFICITY: Characteristic of a type of small (30-80 nm) neurosecretory vesicles, including presynaptic vesicles, but also vesicles of various neuroendocrine cells of both neuronal and epithelial phenotype.

DOMAIN: The calcium-binding activity is thought to be localized in the cytoplasmic tail of the protein.

PTM: Ubiquitinated; mediated by SIAH1 or SIAH2 and leading to its subsequent proteasomal degradation (By similarity).

SIMILARITY: Belongs to the synaptophysin/synaptobrevin family. & Contains 1 MARVEL domain.
Molecular WeightThe unconjugated parent antibody (Cat. No. MAB5258) has an observed molecular weight at ~38 kDa.
