Background InformationCalmodulin Binding Protein (CBP) epitope tags are found in several E. coli expression vectors. Calmodulin (CaM), a small 17 kDa ubiquitous Ca2+ binding protein, acts as an intracellular Ca2+ receptor and transduces Ca2+ transients, usually in response to growth factors. It mediates the activity of a number of Ca2+ regulating enzymes, including protein kinases, phosphatases, nitric oxide synthases, and phosphodiesterase. Calmodulin is the principal intracellular calcium receptor. It is an acidic protein of 148 residues, and upon binding Ca2+, it in turn binds to short peptide sequences of many target proteins. Such interaction is thought to induce a conformational change on the target, resulting in its activation. Targets include the constitutively expressed nitric oxide synthases, the CaM kinases, and PP2B/Calcineurin.

Entrez Gene SummaryCalmodulin is the archetype of the family of calcium-modulated proteins of which nearly 20 members have been found. They are identified by their occurrence in the cytosol or on membranes facing the cytosol and by a high affinity for calcium. Calmodulin contains 149 amino acids and has 4
calcium-binding domains. Its functions include roles in growth and the cell cycle as well as in signal transduction and the synthesis and release of neurotransmitters.[supplied by OMIM]

UniProt Number
UniProt SummaryFUNCTION: Calmodulin mediates the control of a large number of enzymes and other proteins by Ca2+. Among the enzymes to be stimulated by the calmodulin-Ca2+ complex are a number of protein kinases and phosphatases. Together with CEP110 and centrin, is involved in a genetic pathway that regulates the centrosome cycle and progression through cytokinesis.
SUBUNIT STRUCTURE: Interacts with MYO1C and RRAD By similarity. Interacts with CEP97, CEP110, TTN/titin and SRY.
SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Cytoplasm › cytoskeleton › spindle. Cytoplasm › cytoskeleton › spindle pole. Note: Distributed throughout the cell during interphase, but during mitosis becomes dramatically localized to the spindle poles and the spindle microtubules.
PTM: Ubiquitination results in a strongly decreased activity By similarity.Phosphorylation results in a decreased activity By similarity.
MISCELLANEOUS: This protein has four functional calcium-binding sites.
SEQUENCE SIMILARITIES: Belongs to the calmodulin family.
Contains 4 EF-hand domains.

Molecular WeightThe molecular weight is related to the tagged protein.
