      Alternate Names
      • Hepatitis A virus cellular receptor 2 homolog
      • T-cell immunoglobulin and mucin domain-containing protein 3
      • T-cell membrane protein 3
      • TIMD-3
      • TIM-3
Background InformationAs a member of the T cell immunoglobulin and mucin domain (TIM) family, Tim-3 is reported to promote or terminate Th1 immunity and is thought to influence a range of inflammatory conditions. It is constitutively expressed in a subset of murine IFNgamma-secreting Th1 cells, but not Th2 cells, in both human and mice. Additionally, Tim-3 is expressed dendritic cells, and by a subset of CD4+ cells where its levels of expression increase upon anti-CD3/28 stimulation. This molecule is also be highly expressed in in vitro polarized Th1 cells, and at lower levels in Th17 cells. Tim-3 is known to synergize with Toll-like receptors (TLRs) and is thought to regulate Th1 and Th17 cytokine secretion.

      Entrez Gene Number
Entrez Gene SummaryCD4 (MIM 186940)-positive T helper lymphocytes can be divided into types 1 (Th1) and 2 (Th2) on the basis of their cytokine secretion patterns. Th1 cells and their associated cytokines are involved in cell-mediated immunity to intracellular pathogens and delayed-type hypersensitivity reactions, whereas Th2 cells are involved in the control of extracellular helminthic infections and the promotion of atopic and allergic diseases. The 2 types of cells also cross-regulate the functions of the other. TIM3 is a Th1-specific cell surface protein that regulates macrophage activation and enhances the severity of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis in mice.
