      Background InformationInterleukin-23 (IL-23) is a heterodimer, the combination of IL-23-specific subunit p19 and IL-12 subunit p40 comprise the biologically active protein. Like IL-12, IL-23 has been shown to activate the transcription factor STAT4 (signal transducer and activator of transcription-4). Unlike IL-12, IL-23 also seems to play a role in the signaling of memory T cells. IL-23, in conjunction with IL-17, is important in controlling the bacterial growth and inflammation response in an organism with tuberculosis. It has the ability to induce Th17 activation and stimulate inflammation in many tissue types including periodontal lesions.
