Background InformationCD138 is a transmembrane proteoglycan, bearing heparin sulphates and sometimes chondriotin sulfates. It consists of a 30.5 kDa core protein with 5 putative glycosaminoglycans attachment sites. CD138 is a member of the syndecan family. The reported Mr of CD138 ranges from 85,000 to 92,000, presumably depending on the glycosaminoglycan pattern of the molecule (Wijdenes, 1997). Within the hematopoietic system, CD138 is mainly confined to late stages of B-cell differentiation. It is typically expressed at high cellular density in plasma cells (Gattei, 1999). In mature tissues, CD138 is expressed by simple and stratified epithelia, fibroblasts, stratified keratinocytes and endothelial cells (Wijdenes, 1997). Anti-CD138, MI15, was included in the Sixth International Workshop and Conference on Human Leucocytes Differentiation Antigens, and studies by a number of different laboratories confirmed its reactivity with CD138 (Wijdenes, 1997).

Entrez Gene Number
Entrez Gene SummaryThe protein encoded by this gene is a transmembrane (type I) heparan sulfate proteoglycan and is a member of the syndecan proteoglycan family. The syndecans mediate cell binding, cell signaling, and cytoskeletal organization and syndecan receptors are required for internalization of the HIV-1 tat protein. The syndecan-1 protein functions as an integral membrane protein and participates in cell proliferation, cell migration and cell-matrix interactions via its receptor for extracellular matrix proteins. Altered syndecan-1 expression has been detected in several different tumor types. While several transcript variants may exist for this gene, the full-length natures of only two have been described to date. These two represent the major variants of this gene and encode the same protein.
