DescriptionAnti-PP2A Antibody, B β subunit
Alternate Names
  • Serine/threonine-protein phosphatase 2A catalytic subunit beta isoform
  • PP2A-beta
Background InformationPP2A is a heterotrimeric type 2 Ser/Thr phosphatase, composed of a structural subunit (A), a regulatory subunit (B), and a catalytic subunit (C). The structural A and catalytic C subunits form the constitutive core of the enzyme, which associates with one of a large number of regulatory B subunits. There are multiple isotypes (encoded by distinct genes) of the B subunit, grouped into three families: B/PR55, B'/PR61, and B''/PR72 . The prototypical B (or PR55) family of subunits is encoded by three genes, Balpha, Bbeta and Bgamma . The B' (or B56) family consists of at least seven splice variants derived from five genes. RNA's for the two members of the B'' family, PR72 and PR130, arise by alternative splicing or use of alternate transcription start sites from the same gene. Primary structures as well as functions of B and B' subunits are conserved from yeast to mammals. PTPA is a member of the B' family that is required for activation of PP2A by an undefined mechanism. PP2A is distinguishable from PP2B/Calcineurin and PP2C by its partial activity in the absence of divalent cations, and its high sensitivity to Okadaic Acid. It is also thought to be the principal downmodulator of Ser/Thr kinase cascades.

Entrez Gene Number
Entrez Gene SummaryThe product of this gene belongs to the phosphatase 2 regulatory subunit B family. Protein phosphatase 2 is one of the four major Ser/Thr phosphatases, and it is implicated in the negative control of cell growth and division. It consists of a common heteromeric core enzyme, which is composed of a catalytic subunit and a constant regulatory subunit, that associates with a variety of regulatory subunits. The B regulatory subunit might modulate substrate selectivity and catalytic activity. This gene encodes a beta isoform of the regulatory subunit B55 subfamily. Defects in the 5' UTR of this gene may cause a rare form of autosomal dominant spinocerebellar ataxia 12.

UniProt Number
UniProt SummaryFUNCTION: SwissProt: Q00005 # The B regulatory subunit might modulate substrate selectivity and catalytic activity, and also might direct the localization of the catalytic enzyme to a particular subcellular compartment.
SIZE: 443 amino acids; 51710 Da
SUBUNIT: PP2A consists of a common heterodimeric core enzyme, composed of a 36 kDa catalytic subunit (subunit C) and a 65 kDa constant regulatory subunit (PR65 or subunit A), that associates with a variety of regulatory subunits. Proteins that associate with the core dimer include three families of regulatory subunits B (the R2/B/PR55/B55, R3/B''/PR72/PR130/PR59 and R5/B'/B56 families), the 48 kDa variable regulatory subunit, viral proteins, and cell signaling molecules.
TISSUE SPECIFICITY: Brain.
DISEASE: SwissProt: Q00005 # Defects in PPP2R2B are the cause of spinocerebellar ataxia 12 (SCA12) [MIM:604326]. Spinocerebellar ataxia is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous group of autosomal dominant cerebellar ataxias (ADCA). Patients show progressive incoordination of gait and often poor coordination of hands, speech and eye movements. Spinocerebellar ataxia is caused by degeneration of the cerebellum with variable involvement of the brainstem and spinal cord. The molecular defect in SCA12 is the expansion of a CAG repeat in the 5'-UTR of the gene.
SIMILARITY: SwissProt: Q00005 ## Belongs to the phosphatase 2A regulatory subunit B family. & Contains 7 WD repeats. ... hide » see more »
