      Brand Family Chemicon®
      Trade Name
      • Chemicon
      DescriptionAnti-Growth Associated Protein-43 (GAP-43) Antibody
      Alternate Names
      • Neuromodulin
Background InformationGAP-43, a common marker of differentiating neurons, is expressed at elevated levels by developing or regenerating neurons during axon growth. While GAP-43 is an integral membrane protein associated with the cytoplasmic surface of axonal growth cones (and synapses), it is absent from dendritic growth cones. In adult brain, GAP-43 is found in high concentration in presynaptic areas where memory formation is thought to occur, such as frontal cortex, limbic system and hippocampus. Phosphorylation of GAP-43 by PKC (at Ser41 on human, mouse, rat, and bovine GAP-43 or Ser42 on chicken and Xenopus GAP-43) is specifically correlated with certain forms of synaptic plasticity.

      Entrez Gene Number
Entrez Gene SummaryThe protein encoded by this gene has been termed a 'growth' or 'plasticity' protein because it is expressed at high levels in neuronal growth cones during development and axonal regeneration. This encoded protein is considered a crucial component of an effective regenerative response in the nervous system.
      Gene Symbol
      • GAP43
      • PP46
      • B-50
      Purification MethodAmmonium Sulfate Precipitation
      UniProt Number
UniProt SummaryFUNCTION: SwissProt: P17677 # This protein is associated with nerve growth. It is a major component of the motile growth cones that form the tips of elongating axons.
SIZE: 238 amino acids; 24803 Da
SUBUNIT: Binds calmodulin with a greater affinity in the absence of Ca(2+) than in its presence (By similarity).
