Overview

The RCS® Standard is the classic microbial air sampler in the RCS® Portfolio, having been introduced in 1979 as the first handheld microbial air sampler worldwide. It is a lightweight, compact and very robust instrument for use in unclassified areas.

The RCS® Standard samples at an instrument speed of approximately 40 L/min. The instrument allows the selection of five permanently programmed sampling durations: 0.5 min (20 L), 1 min (40 L), 2 min (80 L), 4 min (160 L) and 8 min (320 L). The Instrument is designed to operate with 4 x 1.5 Volt monocell batteries (1.5 Volt alkaline D cells, type LR20). The use of standard NiCd rechargeable batteries (4 x 1.2 Volt) is not recommended, as these do not provide sufficient voltage.

There are several good reasons why the RCS® Standard has been so popular over the years:

  • Lightweight and compact construction
  • Choice between battery and mains operation
  • Constant flow rate of 40 L/min for particles of 4 µm in diameter
  • Five sampling durations selectable for volumes of 20, 40, 80, 160 and 320 L
  • Autoclavable instrument head and impeller
  • Self-explanatory keypad with LED signals when selecting the sampling duration
  • Infrared remote control for increased flexibility
  • Automated switch-off
  • Reproducible results with ready-to-use, standardized agar strips for the detection of fungi and bacteria
