Background InformationFABP1, also known as Fatty acid-binding protein, Liver Fatty acid-binding protein, Fatty acid-binding protein 1, Liver-type fatty acid-binding protein, L-FABP, Squalene- and sterol-carrier protein, SCP, Z-protein, or p14, and encoded by the gene FABP1/FABPL, is an important fatty acid binding and transport protein. FABP1 is produced in the liver and is part of a family of lipid carrier proteins. FABP1 facilitate the transfer of fatty acids between extra and intracellular membranes. FABP1 level in the blood is used as a biomarker for obesity and type II diabetes. Additionally, recent research indicates that FABP1 can modulate stellate cell activation and this may lead to diet-induced nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, thus FABP1 is a key focus of metabolic research.
