      Background InformationMicroprocessor complex subunit DGCR8 (UniProt Q8WYQ5; also known as DiGeorge syndrome critical region 8, Pasha) is encoded by the DGCR8 (also known as DGCRK6, LP4941) gene (ORF C22orf12; Gene ID 54487) in human. The DGCR8 gene encodes a double-stranded RNA-binding protein that functions as a non-catalytic subunit of the microprocessor complex which mediates the biogenesis of microRNAs (miRNA) from the primary microRNA (pri-microRNA) transcript. miRNAs are initially transcribed as pri-microRNA with a local stem-loop that is cleaved by the microprocessor complex to produce the precursor microRNA (pre-miRNA). The microprocessor complex is comprised of the RNase Drosha and the RNA-binding protein DGCR8. DGCR8 is reported to be phosphorylated by Erk and Abl, an event that promotes DGCR8 stability and stimulates Drosha recruitment and subsequent substrate pri-microRNAs processing.
