      Alternate Names
      • Gamma-tubulin complex component 2
Background InformationGamma-tubulin complex component 2 (UniProt: Q921G8; also known as GCP2) is encoded by the Tubgcp2 (also known as Gcp2) gene (Gene ID: 74237) in murine species. Gamma-tubulin complex that is essential for microtubule nucleation at the centrosome is composed of gamma-tubulin, GCP2, GCP3, GCP4, GCP5 and GCP6. GCPs are characterized by sequence homology in two specific regions known as the grip1 and grip2 motifs. GPCs associate with gamma-tubulin to form a V-shaped subcomplex known as gamma-tubulin small complex. In this complex GCPs 2 and 3 interact via their N-terminal domain and form the arms of the V. The two-distal part of the V (C-terminal domains) bind to gamma-tubulin. The gamma-tubulin complex serves as a template for polarized growth and regulation of microtubules in eukaryotes. Significantly higher expression of both GPC2 and 3 have been reported in glioblastoma cells and they are concentrated I the centrosomes in interphase glioblastoma cells. Depletion of GPC2 and 3 causes accumulation of cells in G2/M and result in mitotic delay. (Ref.: Farache, D., et al. (2016). J. Biol. Chem. 291(44); 23112-25; Draberova, E., et al. (2015). J.
