Background InformationMuSK, also known as Muscle, skeletal receptor tyrosine-protein kinase, Muscle-specific tyrosine-protein kinase receptor, or Muscle-specific kinase receptor, and encoded by the gene MUSK, a key muscle specific receptor tyrosine kinase that plays a central role in the formation and maintenance of the neuromuscular junction (NMJ). The NMJ is the special synapse between the motor neuron and the skeletal muscle. MuSK activation in the myotubes regulates the formation of NMJs through the regulation of different processes including the specific expression of genes in the subsynaptic nuclei, the reorganization of the actin cytoskeleton and the clustering of the acetylcholine receptors in the postsynaptic membrane. MuSK also plays a role in the CNS by mediating cholinergic responses, synaptic plasticity and memory function. MuSK is a membrane bound protein localized to the postsynaptic side of the cell membrane at the neuromuscular junction in muscle cells.
