      Alternate Names
      • Long-chain fatty acid transport protein 4
      • FATP-4
      • Fatty acid transport protein 4
      • Solute carrier family 27 member 4
      • FATP4
Background InformationFatty acid transport proteins (FATP) are multifunctional proteins that are involved in the translocation of long-chain fatty acids across the plasma membrane. FATP4 is the only member of this family that is expressed in the small intestine and is localized to the apical brush border of the epithelial cells, where it is responsible for the uptake of dietary lipids. FATP4 exhibits acyl-CoA ligase activity for long-chain and very-long chain fatty acids. Its expression is high in testis, brain, and kidney and very low levels are found in peripheral leukocytes, bone marrow, and skeletal muscle. Defects and depletion of FATP4 have been linked to abnormalities in skin homeostasis and altered insulin sensitivity.
