Histones are dynamic proteins that undergo multiple types of post-translational modifications, including acetylation, phosphorylation, methylation, and ubiquitination. Histone acetylation and deacetylation are reversible and play a major role in determining chromatin structure and function. Histone acetylation occurs mainly on the amino-terminal tail domains of histones. Acetylation neutralizes positive charges on histone and promotes the less condensed and more accessible chromatin conformation known as euchromatin. Histone acetylation is vital in regulating transcriptional activation and DNA replication, recombination, and repair. Histone H3 is one of the five ain histone proteins involved in the structure of chromatin in eukaryotic cells. It is the most extensively modified of the five histones. It features a main globular domain and a long N-terminal tail. Histone H3 is involved with the structure of the nucleosomes of the 'beads on a string' structure.
