      Background InformationOligodendrocyte transcription factor 1 (UniProt: Q9JKN5; also known as Oligo1, Oligodendrocyte-specific bHLH transcription factor 1, Olig1) is encoded by the Olig1 gene (Gene ID: 50914) in murine species. Olig1 is a transcription factor that promotes formation and maturation of oligodendrocytes. Its basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) domain is localized to amino acids 94-153. It cooperates with Olig2 to establish the pMN domain of the embryonic neural tube. Olig1 and Olig2 are highly conserved at the molecular and functional level, however, they display distinct subcellular localization in mature oligodendrocytes. Olig1 is initially found in the nucleus of oligodendrocyte progenitor cells OPCs, but as oligodendrocytes mature it translocates to the cytoplasm of myelinating oligodendrocytes. Olig1 is expressed in the ventral spinal cord as early as 9.5 dpc and its expression declines to undetectable levels by 10.5 dpc and reappears in a narrow zone within the ventral neuroepithelium of the spinal cord. It is also expressed scattered in the mantle zone, likely corresponding to oligodendrocyte progenitors migrating out from their site of origin. By day 15.5 it is shown to be dispersed throughout the gray matter, but in postnatal brain it is predominantly found in the white matter. (Ref.: Dai, J., et al. (2015). J.
