Merck Millipore Donates $10,000 to Environmental and Energy Study Institute in Recognition of Energy Month

November 7, 2013, Darmstadt, Germany — Merck Millipore, the Life Science division of Merck, today announced a $10,000 donation to the Environmental and Energy Study Institute (EESI) in recognition of Energy Month in October. The donation will specifically support EESI’s Transportation and Communities Program, which emphasizes energy efficiency and renewable energy across the transportation sector.

As part of Merck Millipore’s Corporate Responsibility efforts, sites across the globe participated in a month-long personal mobility campaign focused on transportation-related activities, including a “Re.Invent Your Ride” challenge, which encouraged employees to reduce their carbon footprint by seeking alternative modes of transportation both at work and at home. Sites also participated in energy fairs, providing employees with the opportunity to learn about energy efficiency equipment for the home, home energy audits and reducing air travel through video conferencing.

“With transportation contributing to rising greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions globally, we recognized an opportunity to engage employees by emphasizing personal mobility and alternative travel methods during our Energy Month campaign,” says Johanna Jobin, Director of Corporate Responsibility at Merck Millipore. “Our goal was to empower employees to think about simple actions they can take to improve their personal carbon footprint and help reduce energy costs. By doing so, we are focused on implementing change on the individual and local level first by starting internally.”

Energy Awareness Month has been commemorated each October in the United States since 1991 and promotes the need to reduce energy consumption through a variety of government- and business-related activities and programs. Merck Millipore has taken the campaign global with a division-wide effort aimed at raising employee awareness about the importance of energy consumption at work and at home. More than a dozen Merck Millipore sites across the globe participated this year.

EESI’s Transportation and Communities program focuses on how energy and climate challenges affect transportation methods and communities. It also advocates for cooperative energy savings within small communities where the needs and goals are the same between residents. The program works at the federal, state, and local levels to meet these needs and transform how each community thinks about transportation and the environment.
