Background InformationVEGF-D, also known as Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor D, or c-Fos-induced growth factor, FIGF, and encoded by the gene FIGF/VEGFD, is one of a family of vascular growth factors that is active in angiogenesis, lymphangiogenesis and endothelial cell growth. VEGF-D functions during the formation of venous and lymphatic vascular systems and is critical for their maintenance during adulthood. VEGF-D, originally discovered as a c-Fos induced growth factor (FIGF), is developmentally regulated by c-Fos and expressed in a variety of tissues and organs including limb buds, acoustic ganglion, teeth, heart, anterior pituitary as well as lung and kidney mesenchyme, liver, derma, and periosteum of the vertebral column. Because of its role in lymphangiogenesis VEGFD is also a key therapeutic target to modulate metastasis, and recent research demonstrates that VEGFD-MEK-ERK signaling modulates SOX18-mediated transcription in normal cells and thus various pathologies maybe because of a dysregulation of SOXF-mediated transcriptional networks.
