Alternate Names
  • Allograft inflammatory factor 1
  • AIF-1
  • Ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1
  • Protein G1
Background InformationAllograft inflammatory factor 1 (UniProt: P55008; also known as AIF-1, Ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1, Protein G1, Iba1) is encoded by the AIF1 (also known as G1, IBA1) gene (Gene ID: 199) in human. Iba1/AIF1 is a highly conserved cytoplasmic, calcium binding, inflammation responsive scaffold protein that is detected in T-lymphocytes and peripheral blood mononuclear cells. It has also been shown to associate with the actin cytoskeleton at membrane ruffles and at sites of phagocytosis. It is not present in normal arteries, but its expression is induced in vascular smooth muscle cells in response to arterial injury where it enhances growth and promote proliferation in vascular smooth muscle cells through deregulation of the cell cycle by shortening the cell cycle and altering the expression of cyclins. AIF1 is also found in activated macrophages where its expression is augmented by cytokines, particularly interferon gamma. It is also considered as a marker for activated macrophages. Serum AIF-1 levels have been correlated with albuminuria and eGFR in type 2 diabetic subjects and serves as a marker for diabetic nephropathy. Three isoforms of AIF1/IBA1 have been described that are produced by alternative splicing. This clone will react with isoforms 1 and 2 that contain this immunogen sequence. (Ref.: Fukui, M., et al. Antibody TypeMonoclonal Antibody
Entrez Gene Number
Entrez Gene SummaryThis gene is induced by cytokines and interferon. Its protein product is thought to be involved in negative regulation of growth of vascular smooth muscle cells, which contributes to the anti-inflammatory response to vessel wall trauma. Three transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene.
Gene Symbol
  • AIF1
  • G1
  • IBA1
Purification MethodProtein G Purified
UniProt Number
UniProt SummaryFUNCTION: Actin-binding protein that enhances membrane ruffling and RAC activation. Enhances the actin-bundling activity of LCP1. Binds calcium. Plays a role in RAC signaling and in phagocytosis. May play a role in macrophage activation and function. Promotes the proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells and of T-lymphocytes. Enhances lymphocyte migration. Plays a role in vascular inflammation.

SUBUNIT STRUCTURE: Homodimer. Monomer. Interacts with LCP1.

SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Cytoplasm > cytoskeleton. Cell projection > ruffle membrane; Peripheral membrane protein; Cytoplasmic side. Note: Associated with the actin cytoskeleton at membrane ruffles and at sites of phagocytosis.

TISSUE SPECIFICITY: Detected in T-lymphocytes and peripheral blood mononuclear cells.
Molecular Weight~17 kDa observed
