DescriptionImmunoaffinity purified rabbit polyclonal antibody. Recognizes the ~72 kDa COX2 protein.
BackgroundCOX proteins are membrane-associated heme proteins that have cyclooxygenase and peroxidase activities. These enzymes are targets of NSAID (Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as aspirin. Prostaglandins (PGs) formed by the enzymatic activity of COX1 are primarily involved in the regulation of homeostatic functions throughout the body, whereas PGs formed by COX2 primarily mediate pain, fever, and inflammation. COX2 is induced by a wide variety of stimuli and was initially identified as an immediate-early growth response gene. In addition, COX2 expression is markedly increased in 85-90% of human colorectal adenocarcinomas, whereas COX1 levels remain unchanged. COX2 may be involved in angiogenesis, as new angiogenic endothelial cells express the inducible COX2 while normal blood vessels express COX1.
