DescriptionAnti-Tropomyosin Antibody, isoforms 5a, 5b, Br2, Br3
Alternate Names
  • Tropomyosin alpha-1 chain
  • Alpha-tropomyosin
  • Tropomyosin-1
Background InformationTropomyosin, also known as Tropomyosin alpha-1 chain or Alpha-tropomyosin, or Tropomyosin-1, and encoded by the gene Tpm1/Tpm-1/TPMA, is one chain of the heterodimer complex of tropomyosin that binds to actin in muscle and non-muscle cells and plays a central role in the troponin complex in muscle regulating the calcium dependent vertebrate striated muscle contraction. In non muscle cells tropomyosin assists in cell structure by stabilizing the actin cytoskeleton filaments. Tropomyosin is localized to the cytoplasm. Tropomyosin is expressed in cardiac and skeletal muscle cells as well as non-muscle cells. Defects in Tropomyosin may be associated with Cardiomyopathy, familial hypertrophic 3 (CMH3)] disease. It is a hereditary heart disorder characterized by ventricular hypertrophy, which is usually asymmetric and often involves the interventricular septum. The symptoms include dyspnea, syncope, collapse, palpitations, and chest pain. They can be readily provoked by exercise. The disorder has inter-and intrafamilial variability ranging from benign to malignant forms with high risk of cardiac failure and sudden cardiac death.
