Background InformationBile salt-activated lipase (BAL) is a secreted digestive enzyme produced by the pancreas that works in concert with pancreatic lipase and Colipase to allow the digestion and use of dietary triglycerides. BAL is also expressed in breast tissues and, interestingly, in eosinophils. BAL also interacts with galectin-10 (Charcot-Leyden Crystal), a member of the Galectin family involved in T cell proliferation and lysophospholipase inhibition activity and is thought to play a role in eosinophil development as well.
