Background InformationPex3 (also known as peroxin-3, peroxisomal assembly protein PEX3, peroxisomal biogenesis factor 3, transformation-related protein 18) is a multitransmembrane peroxisome protein that is encoded by the PEX3 gene in human (also known as PBD10A and TRG18). Pex19 is involved in maintaining peroxisome biosynthesis and integrity by acting as a docking factor for pex19 and, together with other peroxins (PEXs), is essential for the assembly of functional peroxisomes. The peroxisome biogenesis disorders (PBDs), including Zellweger syndrome (ZWS), neonatal adrenoleukodystrophy (NALD), infantile Refsum disease (IRD), and classical rhizomelic chondrodysplasia punctata (RCDP), are lethal diseases characterized by multiple defects in peroxisome function, resulting in failure of importing one or more classes of peroxisomal matrix proteins into the organelle.
