HostMouse
SpecificityThe antibody reacts with the CD24 antigen a heavily glycosylated molecule that migrates as a broad band of 35-45 kDa on both reducing and non-reducing SDS gel electrophoresis. CD24 is attached to the cell membrane via a glycosyl phosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchor and is expressed at multiple stages of B cell development, beginning with the bone marrow CD34 positive pro-B cell compartment and continuing through mature surface IgM positive/IgD positive B cells. CD24 is also expressed on the vast majority of B-lineage acute lymphoblastic leukaemias, B cell chronic lymphocytic leukaemias and B cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. In the normal spleen, mantle zone lymphocytes are CD24 strongly positive, but germinal center cells are CD24 negative or CD24 weakly positive.

Entrez Gene Number
Entrez Gene SummaryThis gene encodes a sialoglycoprotein that is expressed on mature granulocytes and in many B cells. The encoded protein is anchored via a glycosyl phosphatidylinositol (GPI) link to the cell surface. An alignment of this gene's sequence finds genomic locations with similarity on chromosomes 3p26, 15q21, 15q22, 20q11.2 and Yq11.1. Whether transcription, and corresponding translation, occurs at each of these other genomic locations needs to be experimentally determined.
Gene Symbol
  • CD24
  • CD24A
UniProt Number
UniProt SummaryFUNCTION: SwissProt: P25063 # Modulates B-cell activation responses. Signaling could be triggered by the binding of a lectin-like ligand to the CD24 carbohydrates, and transduced by the release of second messengers derived from the GPI-anchor. Promotes AG-dependent proliferation of B-cells, and prevents their terminal differentiation into antibody-forming cells.
SIZE: 80 amino acids; 8097 Da
SUBUNIT: Interacts with LYN and FGR in a cell-type specific manner. Binds FRG in a small cell cancer line, LYN in the erythroleukemia cell line K562 and in Burkitt's lymphoma.
SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Cell membrane; Lipid-anchor, GPI-anchor.
TISSUE SPECIFICITY: B-cells. Expressed in a number of B-cell lines including P32/SH and Nawalwa. Expressed in erythroleukemia cell and small cell lung carcinoma cell lines. Also expressed on the surface of T-cells.
PTM: Extensively O-glycosylated.
DISEASE: SwissProt: P25063 # Genetic variations in CD24 are involved in multiple sclerosis susceptibility (MS) [MIM:126200]. MS is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the gradual accumulation of focal plaques of demyelination particularly in the periventricular areas of the brain. Peripheral nerves are not affected. Onset usually in third or fourth decade with intermittent progression over an extended period. The cause is still uncertain.
SIMILARITY: SwissProt: P25063 ## Belongs to the CD24 family.
