Background InformationC-C motif chemokine 22 (UniProt: O00626; also known as CC chemokine STCP-1, MDC(1-69), Macrophage-derived chemokine, Small-inducible cytokine A22, Stimulated T-cell chemotactic protein 1, CCL22) is encoded by the CCL22 (also known as MDC, SCYA22, A-152E5.1) gene (Gene ID: 6367) in human. MDC/CCL22 is a member of the intercrine beta family that plays a role in the trafficking of activated/effector T-lymphocytes to inflammatory sites and other aspects of activated T-lymphocyte physiology. It is highly expressed in macrophage and in monocyte-derived dendritic cells, and thymus. It is reported to be chemotactic for monocytes, dendritic cells, and natural killer cells. It displays mild chemoattractant activity for primary activated T-lymphocytes but is a potent chemoattractant for chronically activated T-lymphocytes. Its signaling activity is achieved through the C-C chemokine receptor type 4 (CCR4). It acts as a mediator of lung inflammation after hemorrhage and resuscitation. MDC/CCL22 is synthesized with a signal peptide (aa 1-24) that is subsequently cleaved off. It can be proteolytically cleaved into three processed forms that are known as MDC (3-69); MDC (5-69); and MDC (7-69) (numbered without the signal peptide). (Ref.: Ritcher, JR., et al. (2014).
