Connective Tissue Growth Factor (CTGF) is a member of the CNN family of growth factors that are characterized as having cysteine-rich peptides with four specific domains. CTGF was originally identified in endothelial cells as a significant chemotactic and mitogenic factor. Research has revealed CTGF to have several biological properties which include chemotaxis, cell proliferation, promotion of adhesion and the formation of extracellular matrix. It is also necessary for such biological processes as wound healing, scar formation, fibrosis, embryogenesis and angiogenesis. In its role as an inducer of angiogenesis, CTGF has been associated with vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). As a result of its pro-fibrotic properties, CTGF is thought to be a promising target for therapy in conditions involving pathological fibrosis such as chronic fibrotic disease, chronic kidney disease and proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). Cell types found to express CTGF are endothelial cells, fibroblasts and vascular smooth-muscle cells.

The protein encoded by this gene is a mitogen that is secreted by vascular endothelial cells. The encoded protein plays a role in chondrocyte proliferation and differentiation, cell adhesion in many cell types, and is related to platelet-derived growth factor. Certain polymorphisms in this gene have been linked with a higher incidence of systemic sclerosis. [provided by RefSeq].
FUNCTION: Major connective tissue mitoattractant secreted by vascular endothelial cells. Promotes proliferation and differentiation of chondrocytes. Mediates heparin- and divalent cation-dependent cell adhesion in many cell types including fibroblasts, myofibroblasts, endothelial and epithelial cells. Enhances fibroblast growth factor-induced DNA synthesis.
