General description

Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) is a key intermediate filament protein predominantly expressed in astrocytes, a type of glial cell in the central nervous system. GFAP plays a vital role in maintaining the structural integrity of astrocytes and supporting their functions, including the regulation of the extracellular environment, the provision of metabolic support to neurons, and the modulation of synaptic activity.

GFAP serves as an important biomarker for astrocyte activation and neuroinflammation. Elevated levels of GFAP in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and blood may indicate reactive astrogliosis, a condition often associated with brain injury, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer′s disease, and other neurodegenerative disorders. As increased GFAP levels often reflect the extent of neuroinflammatory responses and neuronal damage, GFAP is a critical target to monitor when developing strategies aimed at mitigating neuroinflammation and preserving neuronal health.

Features and Benefits

  • Femtogram-Level Aβ1-42 Detection: Achieves exceptional sensitivity (fg/mL) in serum, plasma or CSF.
  • Enhanced Signal Performance: Features a broadened dynamic range with reduced background noise, ensuring consistent results.
  • Familiar Assay Format: Utilizes a standard sandwich immunoassay design merged with advanced sensitivity.
  • Flexible Automation Integration: Incorporates with liquid handling systems to standardize workflows and further minimize variability.
  • Specialized Technical Support: Supported by SMC® platform experts.

Packaging

96 well assay

Analysis Note

  • Sensitivity: LLOQ 230 fg/mL* (SMCxPRO® Instrument)
  • Standard Curve Range: 60-300,000 fg/mL
  • Intra-assay CV: <15%
  • Inter-assay CV: <20%
  • Linearity: Serum: 101% Plasma: 99% CSF: 101%
  • Recovery: Serum: 118% Plasma: 115% CSF: 101%
*Indicative LLOQ created from average of 14 independent in house runs, where >80% met same value defined with CV & Recovery +/- 20%. Refer to CoA for lot specific performance.

Other Notes

Although GFAP was detectable in non-human primate (rhesus macaque and cynomolgus monkey), feline, rat, mouse, and canine samples, the assay has not been verified for these species.
