DescriptionPurified rabbit polyclonal antibody. Recognizes the ~75 kDa p75 neurotrophin receptor protein.
BackgroundNeurotrophins are a family of proteins that interact with neurotrophin receptors and provide various survival signals in nervous tissue. p75 neurotrophin receptor (p75NTR) is also known as the low-affinity neurotrophin receptor, while TrkA, TrkB, and TrkC are the high affinity receptors. p75NTR is a member of the tumor necrosis factor receptor family and is common to all neurotrophins. Similar to the high affinity receptors, p75NTR will bind the neurotrophins, but unlike the Trk proteins, it has no cytoplasmic tyrosine kinase domain. The roles of this receptor are controversial, as it may also be involved in either promoting or downregulating the response to the neurotrophins. It may also function to increase the affinity of the trk receptors for their respective neurotrophins or it may bind neurotrophins and prevent them from binding to the high affinity receptors. p75NTR does not have a catalytic intracellular tyrosine kinase domain, but it is still capable of mediating the neurotrophin signals.
