      Background InformationGlutamate receptor ionotropic, NMDA3A (UniProt: A2AIR5; also known as NR3A) is encoded by the Grin3a gene (Gene ID: 242443) in murine species. NR3A is a member of the glutamate-gated ion channel family. NMDA receptor complexes are ligand-gated ion channels with high calcium permeability and voltage-dependent sensitivity to magnesium. They are involved in long-term potentiation and neuronal plasticity and regulate the number of nerve cells during development. However, over-stimulation NMDA receptors can lead to neuronal degeneration. The NMDA-receptor-channels display relatively higher Ca2+ permeability than the non-NMDA ionotropic receptors and can be blocked by Mg2+ in a voltage- dependent manner. NR3A is widely distributed and displays reduced single-channel conductance, low calcium permeability and low voltage-dependent sensitivity to magnesium. It is believed to play a role in the development of dendritic spines. NR3A is a multi-pass post-synaptic membrane protein that is synthesized with a signal peptide (aa 1-26), which is subsequently cleaved off to generate the mature form that has four transmembrane domains (aa 675-695; 716-734; 746-769; and 934-956).
