Background InformationEpithelial Call Adhesion Molecule (EpCAM, CD326) is a transmembrane glycoprotein of approximately 40 kDa. EpCAM was initially identified as a tumor associated marker having high expression in quickly proliferating epithelial tumors. As such, EpCAM has been of significant interest as a means for tumor diagnosis and therapy. EpCAM is also expressed in normal epithelial cells, but in comparatively lower levels. Preliminary studies limited EpCAM’s function to cell-cell adhesion; however more recent studies indicate it to be involved in diverse processes that include cell migration, cell signaling, differentiation and proliferation.

      Entrez Gene Number
Entrez Gene SummaryThis gene encodes a carcinoma-associated antigen and is a member of a family that includes at least two type I membrane proteins. This antigen is expressed on most normal epithelial cells and gastrointestinal carcinomas and functions as a homotypic calcium-independent cell adhesion molecule. The antigen is being used as a target for immunotherapy treatment of human carcinomas. Mutations in this gene result in congenital tufting enteropathy. [provided by RefSeq].
