      Alternate Names
      • Neural precursor cell expressed developmentally down-regulated protein 5
      • neural precursor cell expressed, developmentally down-regulated 5
      • septin 2
Background InformationSeptin-2 belongs to the septin family of GTPases. Originally characterized as regulators of cytokinesis, septins were later implicated in other cellular processes. Recent studies show that septins have a broader role in microtubule-dependent processes, such as karyokinesis, exocytosis, and maintenance of cell shape. Many members of the septin family have been shown to colocalize or interact with the microtubule cytoskeleton, suggesting that these might be general properties of septins. Septin-2 is expressed in the brain and may be associated with Alzheimer's disease.

      UniProt Number
UniProt SummaryFUNCTION: Required for normal progress through mitosis. Involved in cytokinesis.

SUBUNIT STRUCTURE: Monomer, and homodimer. Nucleotide binding promotes dimerization. Heterohexamer composed of two heterotrimers containing one copy each of SEPT2, SEPT6 and SEPT7. The asymmetrical heterotrimers associate head-to-head to form a hexameric unit that assembles into filaments.

SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Cytoplasm. Cytoplasm › cytoskeleton › spindle. Note: Accumulates near the contractile ring from anaphase through telophase, and finally condenses into the midbody. In interphase and postmitotic cells, localized to fibrous or granular structures, depending on the growth state of the cell By similarity.

SEQUENCE SIMLARITIES: Belongs to the septin family.
